Join the next Roamin’’Catholics adventure Saturday, April 13 as we explore some wonderful offerings in Kansas City. The bus will leave the church parking lot promptly at 7:30 a.m.

The first stop will be at the Steamboat Arabia Museum for a guided tour explaining the history of a side wheeler steamboat that sank in the Missouri River in 1856, was completely covered by mud, silt and water and was rediscovered in 1988. We’ll learn about the salvage and the restoration of thousands of artifacts.

The next stop will be at Jack Stack’s Barbecue. Zagat rated this restaurant as having the “best barbecue in the country.”

The last stop will be the Nelson Art Museum for a guided tour by a museum docent. The tour will include a history of the museum plus an overview of the museum’s famous collections. There should also be some time available to explore on your own. We will return to the church around 6:30 p.m.

The cost for the day is $45 per person, not including lunch, which will be handled by separate checks. Reservations and payment will be due no later than Monday, April 1. Make checks payable to Sacred Heart Church. For questions and/or reservations, contact Ron Meyer,ron.meyer9@yahoo.com or Colleen Meyer colleenmarie72@yahoo.com or 573-445-2270.

Sacred Heart Film Series presents episode 9 of Fr. Robert Barron’s documentary series, Catholicism.

Thursday, Feb. 7, noon; Gathering Space (bring a sack lunch)

Friday, Feb. 8, 7 p.m., Activity Building (light refreshments)

In this lesson, Father Barron explores Catholic spirituality, which is centered on prayer. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “Prayer is the lifting up of the mind and the heart to God.”

On pilgrimage to the places where the great saints and spiritual masters lived, Father Barron explores the different types of prayer: contemplation; adoration; petition; and intercession. In telling the stories of Catholics like Thomas Merton, St. Theresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross, Fr. Barron demonstrates how the human person can be transformed through prayer that manifests a deep, spiritual commitment centered in Christ.

The presentation will run 41 minutes, followed by a brief discussion period — a great way to begin the final semester of Why Catholic? and to approach Lent, as prayer is one of the practices emphasized during this time of the liturgical year. Please come . . . and bring a friend!

Signups have been wonderful and we have most of the shifts filled. We should be very proud of how we, as a parish, have responded. So many have been willing to give time and talent to this wonderful ministry. Things have been going well at the shelter and many less fortunate brothers and sisters have been welcomed to a warm, safe place to sleep, with a fortifying breakfast the next morning. Who can estimate the number of lives touched by Jesus Christ through this ministry?

Please make sure you have your shift noted when you have signed up, and arrive only about 5-10 minutes or so before. Enter through the door facing the parking lot behind Wilkes Church. People arriving at midnight should be able to see colleagues waiting to sign you in right inside the door as you arrive and knock. Be sure to sign in on the volunteer sheet at the Center when you arrive. Some volunteers are only listed as guests, and we need your information filled out completely when you get there.

If you have signed up for a shift and haven’t received word confirming your time, or see your name on the list by now, please contact BJ, 573-864-5193 or rodemanb@health.missouri.edu; or Frank 573-445-5095 or fjcunningham4@gmail.com. For those who have not signed up for a shift, but have supported RATI with your prayers, we thank you. To support this cause with monetary donations or goods, there is an ongoing need for the following items:

Cup o’ soup, peanut butter or cheese crackers

Sandwich meats and cheeses

Milk and juice

Paper bowls, cups, (cold and hot)

Fresh fruits and veggies salad, ranch dressing

Breakfast muffins, etc.

If you have such items to donate, bring them to Sacred Heart Activity Building on the stage right at top of the stairs, or in the refrigerator marked Room at the Inn. Please call BJ and she will pick up and deliver. Money in the form of checks marked Room at the Inn can be sent to: Columbia Interfaith Resource Center, P.O. Box 272, Columbia, MO 65205.

Thank you for all you’ve already done and for the blessings you’ve bestowed through this ministry.
